List of services: 

Abdominal Aorta Duplex Scan

Indications:

> Detect presence of aneurysm of the abdomen, iliac, femoral arteries
> Evaluation of abdominal pulsatile mass
> Surveillance of previously diagnosed abdominal aneurysm
> Screening of patient’s >50years of age and family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
> Evaluation of aortic coarctation
> Evaluation of aortoiliac/lower extremity inflow arterial disease
> Surveillance of arterial vascular intervention/reconstruction

Contraindications:

> Fresh surgical incisions, drains/tapes
> Presence of peritoneal dialysis catheters and drains
> Intestinal gas obstructing the duplex window
> Obesity
> Rigid/distended and large abdomen
> Poor window for pregnant patients in their 2nd or 3rd trimesters

Patient Preparation:

> Evaluation can be done without fasting but if done as an elective procedure, patient may fast overnight to eliminate overlying bowel gas
> Nothing by mouth avoids gastrointestinal tract activation leading to increased GUT velocity and vasculature size
> Can proceed even without bowel preparation but if done as an elective procedure, patients can be instructed on bowel preparation.
> Procedure should be scheduled early in the morning to reduce the amount of intestinal/bowel gas
> No mint, gums or smoking to avoid accumulation of air
> Special consideration when scheduling diabetic patients with strict glucose monitoring while fasting

Renal Duplex Scan

Indications:

> Assessment or renal arteries and kidney
> Hypertensive patients with epigastric bruit
> Refractory hypertension
> Screening of renal artery stenosis
> Follow up of renal artery intervention (bypass graft, stent)
> Known patient with renal artery stenosis with elevated creatinine or BUN
> Suspected occlusion of renal vein
> Renal artery embolus, fibromuscular dysplasia
> Thrill or bruit following renal biopsy
> Assessment of renal transplant dysfunction and/or presence of bruit

Contraindications:

> Fresh surgical incision/drains
> Rapid breathing or on respirator
> Inability to hold breath
> Obesity
> Bowel gas
> Inability to change position and cooperate with operator

Patient Preparation:

> Nothing by mouth for 8hours’ prior
> Schedule procedure early in the day to lessen bowel gas interference
> Morning meds can be taken with small sips of water
> Avoid chewing gum or smoking in the morning of the study, it may cause increase in swallowed

SPIROMETRY/PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST
Patient Preparation:

> Avoid drinking alcohol 4hours before the procedure
> Do not eat a large meal 2hours prior to the procedure
> Don’t engage in strenuous activity 30minutes before the procedure
> No smoking for 8 to 12 hours prior to the test 
> Document your medication used and when it last taken
> Six hours prior to spirometry, stop using short-acting bronchodilators
> A minimum of 24hrs prior to Spirometry, cease using twice daily operations or long acting bronchodilators (including combination inhalers)
> 48hours before the test, stop taking Tiotropium or once-daily preparations
